Introduction

What Is Empowered Learning?

Empowered Learning is a method that gives students choices to find their most supportive learning environment within the limitations of a classroom, or another environment.

STEP 1

Gather your student

Once you’ve spotted your student (or they’ve spotted you) let them lead the greeting. It might be a high five, hug, or simply a smile and wave. Walk together and head to the place with all the tools.

STEP 2

Select a Tool

While everyone has their own unique learning style, different days might call for different tools. Or no tools at all. Ask your student what they need in order to focus today. You can prompt them with some suggestions based on your previous work together, or just stand back while they pick.

STEP 3

Choose A Space

Different buildings have different options. But there are usually always options. Give your student the ability to choose whether they’d like to work by the window, in a quiet room, or elsewhere.

STEP 4

Working together

Because your student opted for or against a tool when you greeted them doesn’t mean they can’t change their mind. Do they feel restless and want to grab a balance board or are they having difficulty reading and want to draw words out? If you notice your student beginning to fidget, ask them if they would like to adjust their environment.

Tools by learning style

Someone’s learning style is their preferred way of absorbing and retaining information. If new information is delivered in the format of their style it optimizes their ability to learn.

Spaces

How we use a space can affect our ability to learn. A shift in how we use the space or small change in scenery can also allow us to focus or re-focus.
